More Info

Dr. Martens Cobb's Lane factory in Wollaston, Northamptonshire, is the factory where the very first Dr. Martens boot, the 1460, was made. It survived the factory closures of a decade ago and has continued making boots and shoes as they have always been made in Wollaston; with craftsmanship and quality and, above all, with the unique Dr. Martens manufacturing process.

As demand for Dr. Martens 'Made in England' range grows globally, it is time again for expansion. Dr. Martens is now seeking to recruit new workers in the hope that demand can be met and, also, that shoe-making skills can be kept alive in Northamptonshire.

Dr. Martens will be launching a new apprenticeship scheme in January 2012, in partnership with South Leicester College. This scheme aims to offer opportunities for young people seeking work in one of the oldest, and yet most dynamic, manufacturing industries.

Open Evening

Dr. Martens will begin its recruitment drive at the beginning of January 2012. Those who register their interest in the apprenticeship scheme will be invited to an open evening, at the Dr. Martens factory at Cobbs Lane, Wollaston (see 'HOW TO APPLY' below). All candidates that come to the open evening will be asked to complete an application form on the night. From that application form, Dr. Martens will invite selected candidates to an assessment session.

The Scheme

The year-long scheme will then start in February, and the apprentices will be employed and paid by Dr. Martens. During the placement, apprentices will rotate around different areas within the factory to help broaden their knowledge and skill sets, and will ultimately be qualified to work as a Footwear Operative (specifically either in Clicking, Closing, Lasting or Finishing). Eventually these craftsmen may also be considered to travel the world to ensure that all Dr. Martens products - wherever they are manufactured – are made not only using the right methods but also respecting the art of industrial manufacturing.

Qualifications

On successful completion, the apprentices will receive the two qualifications that make up an Intermediate Apprenticeship in Fashion and Textiles (Footwear Pathway):
- Competence Qualification - Level 2 Certificate in Footwear & Leather (NVQ) (QCF)
- Knowledge Qualification - Level 2 Certificate in Footwear
Production (this provides the underpinning knowledge and understanding for the Level 2 certificate in Footwear & Leather)

The units are based on the National Occupational Standards for Footwear & Leather goods 2008/09.

How To Apply

No previous experience is necessary and the initiative is open to anyone over the age of 16 who is eligible to work in the UK. In order to attend the open day candidates will need to register their interest by contacting the HR Department either by email – recruitment@drmartens.com or on 01933 663281.
